Homestead Enterprises is a solar design and renewable energy products
business based at its present location since 1973. Anticipating future
trends, owner Stephen Heckeroth began building electric car garages into
his award-winning solar homes in 1991. Having no cars to put in them, he
formed MendoMotive. Now we have electric cars for your garage and his.
Common wisdom suggests that electric cars are good second cars. In reality
your gas guzzler should be your second car. If you drive under 50 miles per
day (and most people do), an EV can be your primary vehicle.
Imagine never again having to check your car's oil or antifreeze. No more
tune-ups, and you can cruise right by those gas stations. Forget about
those high gasoline prices and smog checks. Best of all, you'll have the
satisfaction of knowing that you're driving a clean, quiet zero-emission
electric vehicle.
How fast will it go?
Our EVs can cruise at highway speeds of 55-65 mph and reach over 70 mph. The Spyder replica reaches over 100 mph.
How is the acceleration?
Acceleration varies from peppy for a light 2,500-3,000 pound vehicle to moderate for the heavier vehicles. Optional high-powered systems provide faster acceleration even in heavier vehicles.
How much are new batteries?
Wet cells: $50 each x 20 = $1,000
Sealed cells: $150 each x 20 = $3,000
Battery life: 3-6 years with average use and good care
Any other expected maintenance?
Put water in the batteries once a month. Check gear oil or transmission fluid and differential. Lubricate ball joints. Replace motor brushes after 80,000 miles. That's it.
Is the overall operating cost, including battery replacement, higher or
lower than a gas car?
That's subject of great debate. We believe it's about the same. However, daily operating cost is definitely lower for the electric; it's about 1 cent per mile.
How much does an electric conversion cost?
We can convert a car for $10,000 - $15,000, plus the cost of the car. An electric vehicle requires approx. $6,000 - $10,000 in parts and 200 - 400
hours of labor.
What vehicles can you convert to electric?
Bikes, trikes, cars, trucks, vans. The lighter the vehicle, the better.
Is there a warranty?
We guarantee our workmanship for six months and transfer all parts warranties to you.
What about repairs?
We repair most electric vehicles and maintenance is available in selected locations throughout California.
Do you provide other services?
We consult on vehicle design or component selection and perform research and development on advanced components.
